Remnants of roman fortifications, for example – most notably the Multangular Tower – are still visible, harking back to city’s origins in AD 71 as Eboracum, a Roman garrison and late a provincial capital of the Roman Empire.

Yorks historical importance far exceeds that of its larger neighbors Leeds and Sheffield, having served as a royal court and administrative capital and as an economic and ecclesiastical centre.
